Noah’s ark and the world-wide flood, was it just a fable or is it a part of history? Was the ark large enough to hold all the animals? Was the ark actually sea-worthy? How could Noah build a ship that large back then? Was the flood local or was it actually a world-wide flood? What does the Bible and science say about all of this?
Jesus believed that Noah was an actual person and that the flood was an actual event. We can see this in Matthew 24:37-38, “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark…”
Jesus was describing events at the end of the world. So, if Jesus believed in Noah and the flood, then as Christians (or followers of Jesus Christ), then we should also believe in Noah and the flood as history and not as a fable.
There are a few great resources out there that can help you in your study of this topic and other aspects of creation, but we would like to highlight one in particular with this post. It is Creation Ministries International (CMI) at Creation.com and specifically their Creation Magazine Live show which can be viewed at their website or on YouTube. I’ll place a few of their episodes that apply to this topic of Noah and the flood below for your convenience and to answer the questions listed in the opening paragraph. For those that are struggling with the choice between the Bible’s account of creation and with evolution and are losing faith, then spending a few hours watching some of CMI’s videos on the topic might be helpful. It will more than likely strengthen your faith in the creation account of the Bible.
The CMI website says that their mission is “To support the effective proclamation of the Gospel by providing credible answers that affirm the reliability of the Bible, in particular its Genesis history.”
CMI does a great job of discussing the science behind the events of Genesis as true historical events and they often refer to peer-reviewed scientific papers/studies during their show since they have a handful of scientists and PhDs on their staff.
